FAQ

Our experience working with thousands of individuals helps us to understand that you probably have a number of pressing questions right now. This section answers some of the key concerns you may have.

What should I do first?
If you are unprepared for this transition, our advice is to wait before doing anything. Think first, act later. And you have only one chance to make a good first impression in the market. Be sure you are ready to put your best foot forward before you begin contacting old acquaintances, search firms, and potential employers. You must be very ready to answer the question "What value can you provide for us...." before talking with your contacts.

Won't I miss some opportunities?
Possible, but not likely. Opportunities have a longer life span now than in the past. And the key to remember is that you have to make a good impression to even have a shot at the opportunity. We believe it is usually better to first figure out what you want to do and how you plan to market your value before beginning to contact people. And usually, a week or two makes little difference. But if you are aware of something that is attractive to you now, discuss it with your advisor. We can do a "crash course" to get you as ready as possible for that opportunity you cannot risk losing.

Are there any major mistakes people often make during this process?
There aren't many. Most people have pretty good instincts. But, we believe a key is to think for yourself. Don't apply past understanding, old advice or inappropriate advice to your situation. What works for you may or may not work for others. Also, many people look too quickly past the opportunity this time can bring, and primarily see the negatives. Positive thinking and positive choices about how to approach this process will go a long way to being successful.

How do I communicate this change to others?
Make a communication plan. Think it through. Most people want to know that you are doing okay. And you want to be sure people understand you have the maturity to handle adversity and change. The message you deliver determines in large part how people will react.

How long will it take me to make a successful transition?
It depends on your circumstances. We will develop an estimate with you based on your goals, experiences, and requirements. Many believe incorrectly the old inaccurate statement "one month for every $10,000 in salary...." This does not make sense. Salary is not even the most important factor in determining job search length. The most significant determinant is your personal motivation, followed by focus on a clear goal, job search approach, and confidence.

What are the key parts of a successful transition process?
Successful transitions have the following key parts:

  • An ending, marked by your own personal acceptance of the change
    you are going through.
  • A realization that you have control over your own life and career.
  • An understanding of what you want to do...of the interests, values and skills you wish to apply in the market. These can be summarized into your value proposition to the market.
  • An understanding of your target market - where you want to do what you want to do.
  • An action plan to implement your search for your goal.
  • A solid decision process when options are achieved.
  • A start up plan for success in your new position/role.
